National Conversation on Education in the Kurdistan Region

On September 19th, a national conference about the education sector at the American University in Dohuk. President Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and other high level ministers were present.

In the conference, it was highlighted how the education system is of paramount importance in any country, and as such also in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. President Nechirvan Barzani noted that a functional education system allows a country to reach the centre stage of the international arena, because scientific progress is fundamental to build a better society and a better nation. He said: “The initiative of this conference today in Dohuk, can be an important and vital step, if we together have the courage to employ our thought and imagination to identify our issues in this field. Identifying the problems of education and higher education, need to be within the framework of new social, economic, security and technological changes.”

Prime Minister Barzani emphasized that education depends on students, teachers and academics so it is important to consult with them. He reaffirmed that one of the priorities of the 9th KRG Cabinet remains the reform of the whole education system, from kindergarten to higher education. He announced that creation of a “National Accreditation Body, whose task will be evaluating and accrediting academic centers to international standards in order to develop the sector and set out a strategy to face all challenges”.
